Ghost Rider is a Marvel Comics character who has had several iterations, with Johnny Blaze being a prominent one in the Modern Age of comics. Blaze first appeared as Ghost Rider in Marvel Spotlight #5 (August 1972).
In his most recognized origin story, Johnny Blaze makes a deal with Mephisto to save his adoptive father, Crash Simpson, from a terminal illness. In exchange for Crash's health, Blaze unknowingly sells his soul.
This deal results in Blaze becoming bound to the spirit Zarathos, transforming him into the Ghost Rider. As Ghost Rider, Blaze is a fiery skeletal figure who rides a demonic motorcycle, fighting evil and dispensing vengeance.
His powers include superhuman strength, durability, hellfire manipulation, and the ability to inflict pain on others by gazing into their souls with the Penance Stare.
